Hewenden Viaduct comprises 17 arches, each 50 feet in span, and is 376 yards long. At 123 feet high, it was the second tallest in England when built. It's reputed that shifting sands forced builders to dig its foundations much deeper than anticipated, with the piers sunk to a maximum depth of 62½ feet. Stone built, it is thought to have been engineered by Richard Johnson.
Opened in 1884, the last traffic to cross the viaduct did so in 1963. Since 1985 it has been Grade II listed and is now tarmacked to form part of the Great Northern Trail footpath.
