Both Podgill and Merrygill viaducts, on the former Stainmore line, were originally built to carry a single track but were widened in 1889 when the route was doubled. They are around 80 feet high and comprise 11 and nine arches respectively. Nowadays the structures are in the care of the Northern Viaducts Trust. Grade II listed Podgill and its sister are part of the Hartley-Stenkrith footpath, to the south-east of Kirkby Stephen.
