Silkstone tunnels

The two tunnels at Silkstone (unsurprisingly known at No.1 and No.2) sat at the top of the formidable Worsborough incline. Although it was not unknown for four engines to haul trains up the 1 in 40 gradient, heavy westbound trains had often slowed to a crawl by the time they reached the tunnels. The line was electrified after the Second World War as part of the Woodhead scheme. The tunnels are separated by a short, deep cutting. No.1’s eastern portal has recently been buried after falling into disrepair.
